Seems like this is happening more often than is known. On the 5th of may 2008, I deposited $1000 cash in a Wachovia ATM, Wildwood branch, Marietta Ga,and 2 days later they debited my account claiming the envelope was empty. Fact is Wachovia employees stole my money. No one can explain what happened to the deposit slip that was in the envelope. The branch staff say they can't help as corporate handles all ATM operations. I have been calling ATM dispute but no satisfactory has been forthcoming. Per the last correspondence the bank is absolving itself of any responsibility. Its my word against the two tellers who purportedly discovered the empty envelope. It's sickening.

@Christy: good advice I guess... but it wouldn't have changed anything in this case.

@Jane: Consequences are not the only factor involved in risk. Unless you are stupid enough to get caught on camera, or your friend who conspired to steal money with you rolls over on you, which is very unlikely since he'd be turning himself in too.... its virtually impossible to get caught. Not to mention the majority of the people probably share your mindset, and would be quicker to jump to a logicless conclusion such as that this person misplaced $1k and thought they put it in the envelope (maybe it had a hole in it?!?!), rather than realize that it actually is quite likely that the 2 guys making nearly minimum wage emptying atm's for a living stole the money.

always get a paper statement of the deposit when doing it by atm, for proof if they contest it.

I dont know about Wachovia, but at my bank everything we do (when one person is not directly responcible) is done under dual control.Soooo unless wachovia operates compleately differently (which i doubt) or the tellers collaberated to steal... what? 500 bucks each... risking their jobs as well as being charged with a federal crime (which again i doubt)..... your envelope was prob empty :zzz
